A fisherman of Ares Vallis

Description

I'd like to be there, on a terraformed Mars (or one of the distant past?), fishing in the rivers that might have been in Ares Vallis.

Been working on this on and off since the beginning of February. It was meant to be a quick, sharp piece, but I was displeased with the rocks, and I had to start detailling them obsessively. That took a while.

Inspiration came from the surreal blue sunset shot by Spirit in 2005. The title is an, initially unwitting, nod to Ursula K. Le Guin (A fisherman of the Inland Sea).

This is the fourth fisherman/boatman I've painted this year. I think there's something I really like about water and fishing; it might just be a state of mind!

Oh wow, this is breathtaking. My favorite part has to be the light in the background and just how foreign it feels. But yet everything feels natural as if it's supposed to be that way, despite the odd landscape that could only come form a sci-fi novel. And the effect of the water is nicely done as well. I also have to say I like the way that the water interacts with the light. It actually makes it look like you sat on a high rock somewhere and painted this as you were looking at it.

If I had to give a critique it would have to be that I would like the man in this picture to be bigger and easier to make out. Also I would have to say that the light in the background could be more realistic and make the picture all the more breathtaking. But those are minor thoughts and mostly just my opinion.

Keep up the good work.
