Artist's Comments

For the Daily Sketch Group at CGTalk again, subject: "Where the wild things are".

Photoshop & Painter, altogether about an hour for this final(?) version. Mainly experimenting with brushes and brush controls in Photoshop, and with the airbrush in Painter.

Sorry for yet another speedpainting. :) I'm in a phase where I'm building up technique again, so there's next to nothing when it comes to conceptual work.

Added a closeup at 100% for anyone who's interested in the rendering of the leaves.

Composition, use of color, motion; all really blow me away. I love the way the red at the bottom communicates with the spiral at the top, like it is continuing the spiral started at the top of the image. I think the speed at which you created this is what lends itself to the fluidity of the image. Really like it!

Wow, beautiful - how'd you do the leaves? Custom brush? Or maybe it was blue over the darker color? Amazing effect.
:iconeilidh:
Thanks. By the way, you have some very impressive-looking works in your gallery. I had to add you to my watchlist. :)

Thanks!

You're going to laugh -- it's one of the custom leave-shaped photoshop brushes! However, I set its roundness somewhere at 40%. A fair amount of scattering, slight size and angle jitter, and that was the basis. After that I erased some bits with a soft speckled brush, and then I added more volume with a hard round brush, again with its roundness reduced to 40-50%, angles, scatter again and more size/angle jitter, so as to make it more hazy and random. At points I picked colour from the background to make it blend in better.
I've also used the Pepper Spray from the Airbrush menu in Painter.

I think a close-up would give you a better idea.. I've just added one in the description. :)
:iconlabyrinthine-mind:
Wow, completely awesome :D It doesn't really look like a custom brush though - but you said it was a speedy, so it had to be -- that's why I asked -- could you imagine painting in each one of those leaves? *dies*

They look really good, and really believable. Between you, ~cypherx and ~Dianae I think I'll learn a lot :D

You guys are teaching me whether you realize it or not haha! =D =D

Thank you!
My speedpaintings have a much higher chance of ending up looking good than my more carefully constructed ones. It might have something to do with a state of increased alertness I'm in while I'm trying to get something down fast; I suppose some of it rubs off on the image.
The continuity between the fiery red and the highlighted sky is actually something I pursued consciously. I'm glad you noticed! (more often than not, people point out elements in my paintings that I haven't noticed. I'm glad about that too, of course, but it's a different thing altogether one someone reads a chunk of my intention.) :)
